BATH TWP.: A suggestion by Medina County resident David Shaw at a 2010 trustees meeting will come to fruition Sept. 10 when an Ohio historical marker titled “Shaw Cemetery” will be unveiled. The dedication celebration will start at 2 p.m. at Moore’s Chapel Cemetery, 1631 N. Hametown Road. The marker will tell the history of Shaw’s ancestors, who came to Bath Township in 1829 from Bristol, N.Y. Samuel and Charlotte Hale Shaw purchased and settled on 145 acres near the current cemetery. They conveyed one-half acre of their land to the township for a “burying ground” in 1836, and their 2-year-old daughter, Charlotte, was the first to be buried there. As part of the dedication ceremony, the lives of 12 members of the Shaw family will be re-created in a presentation at the marker site. After a brief history and review of the work done by the Heritage Corridors of Bath, those who donated to the project will be recognized, including: David and Christine Shaw, $1,050; Heritage Corridors of Bath, $500; Bath Township Historical Society, $500; David Darst, $200; the Bath Business Association, $100; and the Bath Homeowners Association, $100. In addition to land from the Shaw family, the history of the cemetery includes the 1879 building of a Methodist chapel adjacent to the site, on land given by Romanzo Boughton. The chapel was named in honor of Oliver Moore, who donated to the construction cost. It was then that locally known Shaw Cemetery became Moore’s Chapel Cemetery. The chapel was sold and dismantled in 1912.Most recently, Linda Swain donated 7.8 acres and sold 4.5 acres to Bath Township for cemetery expansion in 1999.
