SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP
Worker charged
SPRINGFIELD TWP.: A group-home employee faces two felony charges following the death Christmas Eve of a disabled man, police said Friday.
Brandon L. Swain, 26, of Cuyahoga Falls, is charged with failing to provide for a functionally impaired person and involuntary manslaughter.
Police said Richard J. Sonneberger, 40, drowned after being left unattended in a bathtub at the group home in the 3400 block of Pontius Road in Springfield Township.
Police and fire personnel were called to the home Dec. 24 and found Sonneberger unresponsive.
He was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Swain was an employee of Evant Inc. and was responsible for Sonneberger’s care, according to police.
Police Sgt. Eric East said Swain told investigators during an interview that he left Sonneberger in the bathtub to aid other patients who were preparing to leave the facility for the Christmas holiday.
It was not known how long Sonneberger, whose condition was described as severely developmentally disabled, was left alone in the tub, East said.
Caretakers were given orders not to leave Sonneberger alone to bathe, he added.
Swain turned himself in to detectives Friday and was booked into Summit County Jail pending an appearance in Akron Municipal Court.
